Personal Narrative: American Heritage Girl Gathering

Slipping out of the American Heritage Girl gathering, I ran into a different room. As I got dressed up in high heels, put on a giant hat, and slung duffel bags over my shoulders, I recalled what I was supposed to do and say while leading the Explorers, a group of younger girls. Nervously, I hurried down the hall and burst into the room acting like an unprepared camper to set the stage for training the girls on how to prepare for a camping trip. Then, my friends and I instructed the girls in planning a camping trip and had fun teaching them a sleeping bag roll up relay. I enjoy being in American Heritage Girls, a Christian form of scouting for girls, where I have learned leadership, service, and life skills through badge work. Being a member for the last three years has brought me friends, fun, and adventures that I would not have had without American Heritage Girls, AHG. Of all the activities I do, I value American Heritage Girls because I have learned outdoor skills, leadership abilities, and how to make crafts.

After leading the Explorer meeting, I reclined back in a soft green chair and recalled how I taught the girls how to make a packing list, plan a campout, and roll up a sleeping bag through different games. I smiled as I remembered the happy faces of the girls playing the games which I had spent many hours preparing. As I snuggled further into the chair, I realized the leadership abilities and knowledge of the outdoors I used to make the meeting possible. Secretly, I thanked the leaders of AHG for all the hard work they put into American Heritage Girls to prepare girls to go out and face the world as women. Looking towards the future, I realize that AHG will give me and many other girls opportunities to grow into godly women who can take care of themselves and their families, and who might even change the
