On a Saturday afternoon, in mid-December there was a boy who couldn’t stop smiling considering the fact that he was around native Brazilians. His smile brightened the entire room and you could see the excitement in his face due to the fact that he was able to finally demonstrate his ability to speak his third language, Portuguese, which he was so determined to learn and was successful at it. The native speakers were filled with shock on how well the boy could speak and understand their language. That boy was me, Tomas Luna. Being able to speak and understand different languages is a big talent anyone can have. One is either gifted or worked hard to learn a new language. As for me, I believe I wasn’t gifted to learn two other languages, but through determination and by studying every day, I achieved this talent. This was not an easy task to complete. Some days I thought about giving up seeing that it was “too hard”. Most days I would sit in my room and think “Is this even worth my time? Should I keep going? Will I ever be able to speak to other native speakers?”, but one day I told myself “I can do whatever I set my mind to, I just have to keep pushing.” So, that’s what I did for the months that I was learning a new language. I began to read better, pronounce words correctly, construct sentences well, as well as understand videos that I watched on YouTube. During my time, I came upon a website that helped my Portuguese, along with connecting me to native speakers. Which helped me a lot. I did not only learn how to speak Portuguese, but I also learned more about Brazilian culture. This broadened my view on many things. Making me see more and understand things
