Recently, it was brought to my attention that I have the tendency to alienate others by choosing words that can be misinterpreted. I was completely unaware of this and had to reevaluate the way that I speak to people as well as consciously make an effort to avoid the words and phrases that I had grown so accustomed to using in my everyday life. I've always used "really? that's weird" as responses to stories that intrigued me, ie: A friend took six years of Spanish, and my response was "really? that's weird!", because I personally couldn't imagine taking six years of Spanish--and the idea that my friend took six years of it was surprising and interesting.
