Baseball Cards Taught Me All I Needed In Life
A stranger changed my life. I was at a low point, ready to throw the towel in on everything, even when I had it all. I didn’t realize how lucky I truly was. At 10 years old, I wasn’t really your typical young kid. But, that never stopped me from believing that I could do just about anything I wanted. It turns out, the most important part of achieving my goals started by believing in me.
It became almost a monthly ritual, where my mother would drive me out to a small baseball card shop in River Oaks. More times than not it didn’t always happen when I wanted it to with behavioral problems I suffered from ADHD. With that always the first thing I lost through my many outbursts and fights started.

It is no surprise the youth in today’s age has many activities to fill their time. Xbox, Play station, the internet, and Facebook give children the means to become personally involved in the “it” thing to do. Except in my time, I found that escape in the collecting of sports cards. They gave me a way to remember things that have proven to be important to me even in this day in age. It was a hobby that had a plethora of positive effects on whom I have become. It shaped me and the path I chose for my life today. I would find a card of any great player of an era long ago, and this man told me stories about them. It developed my love of the Dallas Cowboys of long ago. The effect was magnetic to me. I fell in love with the likes of Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Drew Pearson and Harvey Martin. I couldn’t wait till I got home with my cards so I could go in the back yard with my football and dream I was one of those players. Not only that, but it made me better academic wise because it improved my organizational skills. Reading the backs of the cards to memorize all the stats and other information they included. Another skill he taught me had to do with geography, being able to identify teams and
