Personal Narrative: Bein In The Military

There are many things that will inspire us throughout our lives and teach us how to all live ethical and moral lives. One of the biggest lessons that I have been taught and live by on a day to day basis is, “Treat others like you want to be treated.” It is a simple rule to live by and it has guided me through many tough decisions in my life. I will go over where I was taught this and share a story about how I have used this belief.
This saying comes from a bible verse, Luke 6:31, which states, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Biblehub, 2000) I grew up in a Christian family and this is where I was taught this belief. I went to church, as often as my grandmother came to visit, or vice versa, but I do not identify myself as being Christian. Even though today I identify myself more as Agnostic, this verse was something that I took to heart and made as one of my basic ethical beliefs. A story about how I utilized this belief is in trying to be as helpful of a person to those around me as possible.

One instance that I stuck to my core beliefs of this was during my most recent deployment. There was an individual I was deployed with whose father was very sick. His father had a very rapidly deteriorating condition that he was trying to get home to see him and get his affairs in order before he passed. Getting him home proved to be a very difficult task due to our commander’s discretion, the information that the Red Cross was getting from the hospital, and backlogs of test results. I had helped him on a daily basis to be able to get back home. On one such occasion, after a twelve hour shift, I stayed behind with the member to perfect a correspondence to his home station’s commander and first sergeant to plead his case to be released from the deployment early to see his father before he
