Personal Narrative: Being Born During Conflict

Being born during conflict, I know how it is to move around a lot. I was born in Peru, near the end of the Cenepa War, a conflict between Ecuador and Peru over bordering lands. Although the war was over the same year I was born, the conflict didn’t end there. Peruvian troops were still deployed, ready for more fighting until 1999. The war wasn’t the only conflict, terrorism from the Shining Path and MRTA terrorized citizens in the 90s. To fight this, President Fujimori had his secret police force kill thousands of people. I grew up during all of this conflict.
Thankfully I was able to migrate to the US, away from all of this. It was good a good thing, which offered a different, more prosperous upbringing. When we moved, we didn’t have much, so I appreciated everything I had. I always had good grades, and ended up getting my school paid for by academic scholarships. Because of the serious nature of my life in Peru, I also had a very secluded life. We would stay within the Latin community, and participate with its events. My mom didn’t want me to lose my culture. That is not the type of experience I want to have. I know that studying abroad is the next step in my higher education. It can help me get out of my comfort zone, and help me experience things outside of a textbook or a computer screen. Steve Jobs said that life is about creating and living experiences that are worth sharing. I have always been a person who learns things by doing them, that’s why I wish to be an engineering major. I want to apply this to my life experiences as well; I want to learn about a country and their culture by experiencing things. I want to learn the things that aren’t in
