This I believe, black is worthy. Yes, I believe black is worthy of life, black is worthy of respect, black is worthy of pain, and yet black is worthy of so much more. Never will I cease to be amazed about how this society views black people. Before I open my mouth society will have the pleasure in speaking on my behalf. Before I act on any situation or event, the media will display my actions long before I have the opportunity to, but those actions are not mine. Nor are the words that society will present to people as my own. However, I am worthy of speaking; I am worthy of my actions being my own and no one else’s.

I recall growing up and knowing that college was an afterthought for my community, yet the disappointment came in the fact that I lived right around the corner from the community college. My parents pushed education, but the first hurdle was to graduate high school and that was something rarely seen. With this being the case I became to understand that education was not meant for me. But I love learning and I enjoy reading, so I know that now I am worthy of all the ground works laid before me to place me into educational systems. So when I read books by Richard Wright or Octavia Butler, I can understand how much of trailblazers they were and how salient it was for them to show black people of their time education meant something more and I will show my generation the same. I am also worthy of respect. To the individuals that follow me when I walk into department stores understand that this black man is worthy of respect. I do not steal, and I will not destroy your store. Like everyone else, I am worthy of your respect this so I
