Chris the Power Seeker

Whenever the topic of student behavior in the classroom comes up as a teacher I pride myself on having very good classroom management and prefer order over chaos. I have learned to follow what Harry Wong once said that and that is “An effective teacher manages a classroom. An ineffective teacher disciplines a classroom”. However, I have always also said that the one type of student who I have always struggled with is the reason why I follow this quotes, and I have had the hardest time controlling are the ones who are the Power Seekers and they try to control what is going on within the classroom. One of these students was Chris. Now Chris was a student who was a fifth grader and was just pain more mature in stature

As a computer teacher we had chairs that would spin around. One of the rules I had was that the students were not allowed to spin on them. I told them they would get a warning but if they could not control themselves that I would have no option but to take their chairs away from them which force them to stand during the lesson. The reasoning had to do with safety more than anything and if I allowed fifth graders to do this let’s be honest some would spin around all day on them if they could. Well on a number of occasions prior to this one incident this day I had spoken with Chris about not spinning. During that day after class had started I had to warn him that he should not spin in his chair or he would lose as the classroom rules are stated. Well as soon as I started to walk away from him sure enough he spun in his chair. When he did this I became very frustrated with him because I felt he was confronting/challenging me on this classroom rule. So I called his bluff because he didn’t think I would take his chair away and I took away his chair. The result was that this caused him him to face the consequences of his actions, and luckily it did not escalate after I did. When I took his chair away I reminded him that this was his decision to loose the chair not mine because he knew the class rule about what he did and as Dr. Phil once said “When you choose your behavior, You choose your
