I was raised in a place where the people are afraid to walk around at night, are told they would have no future, and are embarrassed to tell others what neighborhood they live in. A person is shaped based on the environment they are in, the people they are surrounded by, and the place they call home. I was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas in the Diamond Hill community. It is often referred to as the “ghetto” side of Fort Worth. The people are stereotyped as threatening, unsuccessful, and even immigrants who should not be here. People are discriminated against daily because they are the minority. No matter what others say about us, our neighborhood has immense factors that make it astonishing. Family has always been one of the biggest influences of them all. I was always taught to spend a majority of my free time with my family. Home is not just the house I live in but also my whole neighborhood and the people in it. No matter what rumors are said about Diamond Hill, this neighborhood is more than what people think. One cannot judge this community based on the opinion of others. This is my home and it has shaped me into the person I am today. I consider myself strong-willed. I am a proud Hispanic who grew up in the Diamond Hill neighborhood of Fort Worth where the majority are first-generation Mexican Americans. Going through the difficulties of being discriminated against has shown me to be a better person and not to judge a book by its cover. I grew up to be strong, to not let others words affect me. I learned to have pride in who I am and where I grew up. I want to be the girl who proves everyone wrong, to show that I will be successful not matter what kind of environment I came from. I want to prove that it is more than just where someone comes from, it where they end
