Since I was a young child, I have always wanted to do something important. Although, at the time, my most important decision was what Disney princess movie I would watch that day. I aspired to be a strong, capable warrior like Mulan and to make a difference with kindness and compassion like Belle. When you’re a kid, the world is at your feet. I carried the young mindset that I can accomplish anything with the magical wave of a wand. Now that I’m older, nothing is as simple, and the world often seems out of reach. Despite the fact, my life is boundless and my dreams are limitless. My academic success, diversity, leadership, and service have all helped me work towards my goal of being the best person I can be. Looking beyond external stereotypes gives individuals the opportunity to see the whole person rather than the color of their skin or the distinguishing features. To me, diversity can be classified as people forming various nationalities, religions, groups, sexes, races, and organizations. Diversity is showing complete value in the difference of people. Diversity is important to me because I think it means that it gives people the chance to experience and differentiate customs and beliefs outside of what they are normally used to and accustomed to. By interacting with my native Puerto Rican family I have broadened cultural experiences through language, ethnic foods, celebrations, and lineage. It is a wonderful organization that helps all children reach their potential through supported relationships. I’ve had a strong relationship with my Little Sister since I entered the program in the Fall of 2014. My Little Sister is currently a sixth grader. She’s very independent, passionate, and strong-willed. I believe we both push each other to meet our potential in our own unique ways. My goal is to leave her with characteristics that will help her reach all of her goals and to succeed in life. I believe my Little Sister has changed me more than I have changed her. She has helped me acquire feelings of emotion to a deeper level ranging from empathy to happiness and back around.
