The majority of kids play sports when they are growing up. Some people stay on one sports team for many years while other people play for different teams and different clubs. I was one of the kids that stayed with one team for a long time. When I was eight, I wanted to play competitive soccer so I tried out for a girls rep soccer team for the Markham Soccer Club. I stayed with that team for five years! In those years, the same nine or ten girls would come to tryouts and make it. A few girls have come and gone but for the majority of the time, the “usual girls” stuck together. When a team sticks together, many happy memories and lifetime friendships are made.

My options were the B team in my age group, which was a big step down from my pre-OPDL team. The other option was to play one age group up but all of their talented players had been recruited for the OPDL team as well.

Since I was still on the fence about my soccer future, I decided to try out for the OPDL team to see if it would be a good fit. I was invited to join the team but I decide that the rep program made more sense in my position. Making the OPDL team reassured me that I was good enough.

I chose to play with a higher age group for the winter, U14. Participating with this team made me rethink my OPDL decision. The coach was horrible and some of the girls should have been in house league. We lost every game that season and coming from my team, that was unheard of. The coach changed when it was time for the summer season and he was even worse! I could not stand this person who abused his authority so I went back down to my own age group.
