I remember the day I felt a horrific crack in my arm. It was a normal Saturday in the fall. My brother and I both arose at seven, so we could get ready for our football games later that morning. After we were dressed and ready we went to the kitchen for breakfast, mom had made her wonderful breakfast burritos. When I was done eating I got in the car. It didn’t take long for my dad to get out to the car that day, which was a rarity because he was usually rushing frantically around the the house trying to get my brother ready, because at the time my brother was only in the first grade. We left when my brother finally got in the car after forgetting his shoes by the door.
On the way to the game I felt so excited to finally be playing football again after what seemed like an eternity without it. I was so ecstatic about my game because it was the first game of the season after a long offseason. I had to go through five casts and a brace during those fifteen weeks. The worst part about all of the casts was not being able to shower without taking a plastic bag and using it to cover my cast because the first four weren’t waterproof. The best thing to come from all this pain, frustration, and sadness is that I learned to fear injury less and that injury isn’t to make you worse it is to make you stronger. Some people don’t ever understand this concept of injury, but since I learned at a young age to accept injury and come back stronger I don’t have to learn it later in life. Learning this has made me better a person, student, athlete, and son because this concept applies to any struggle or challenge in life you will have to
