Personal Narrative Essay: Is Cheerleading More Dangerous Than Football

Most people believe cheerleading is not a sport, and that it is less dangerous than football. According to many, Cheerleading is a sport, and Cheerleading is one of the most dangerous sports out there. I have been a cheerleader since 7th grade. Practices consisted of more than reciting cheers and working on our routines. Sometimes there were tears, and even blood, from a stunt gone wrong. Cheerleading is more than matching uniforms and a group of people yelling “Go team, go.” Former members can always take the memories with them but not the moments; They can always take their pom-poms home, but not the point in time. Looking at the pom-pom one might not think it is more than a metal bar with some metallic strands, in our school colors, but to me it is so much more than that. Those gleaming red and blue pom-poms that cheerleaders wave around on Friday nights represent the squad. My high school cheer squad consisted of 14 girls. 14 girls that I spent four crazy years with. This past year, that was me. I took my little piece of the squad and left. Although I was only given four years with them, I’ll carry the memories with me for a lifetime. Now someone else is wearing the uniform I wore and making new memories. Although every year girls leave, new ones join the squad. The goal is the same every year, inspire, and make lifetime friends.
I still talk to the girls I cheered with, and I keep my pom-poms in my dorm room. Cheerleading has given me friends for a lifetime. Although I can’t do a back handspring, and won’t be cheering in college, cheer will always be apart of my life. Even now when I go home on the weekends to watch my home team, I talk to the cheerleaders. My hometown spirit lives inside of me, but I’m glad I have my pom-poms to look at every now and then to take me back to my high school days of
