C hicago weather was very dry, and there was an abundance of wooden buildings, streets and sidewalks. Buildings in Chicago were connected, and made of wood. The hot weather made it easy to catch fire. Us people in Chicago never knew that a small fire like that could ruin the city. Chicago was our major city, thousands of people live here. There were other fires in Chicago, but not as bad as the Great Chicago Fire. Our city of wood was vulnerable.

My city was in flames for two days, burning 3.3 square miles. Flaming wood covered the river and destroyed the north side. By midnight, the Southside of the Chicago was in flames. Trees exploded, crazed horses flailed wildly, dogs ran in circles/ animals were being harmed and pigeons were sucked into swirls of flame. Major banks and extremely expensive things were burned to pieces.

People say that the fire grew quickly and out of control. It moved rapidly north and east toward the city center. Catherine denied the legend. Other people believe that it was caused by heat and dry weather of Chicago.

300 people died and almost everyone was harmed. 100,000 people became homeless. Right after the fire ended, we started re-building the city.
