The cold wind grazed my back, crying out like a child for its mother. My heart pounded with intensity, longing to break out of my chest. I held my darling father and kissed his forehead while the tears in my eyes subsided. The smoke whispered up towards the sky, the charred remains of my home resting in the flames. Where do I go now? I asked myself, though ultimately knowing the answer. No one will accept a Royalist in this town. My story starts, and ultimately ends, with a man named Thomas Akins. He was a popular drunkard but brutal, a leader among men. He started most riots and fights. In most recent years, his attention turned towards the Patriot’s cause. You’re going to be late for the tea.” I groaned and sat up. “Sarah, your hair is atrocious,” maid Althema said as she poured water into the basin. Her plump body moved swiftly in her faded dress. I began stripping down into my undergarments as she left with a huff. I slid myself into the cold water and sat, thinking for a minute. Father was to hold a meeting with the fellow Royalists over dinner and decide how to continue on the war front. One wrong decision and men like Thomas Akins would run the our country. Men like Thomas Akins, I thought. Later around midday, I helped Althema and our other maid Geneva set up the tables with metal knives and wooden plates before the dinner guests arrived. Geneva, despite being small as a mouse, had specially prepared geese and roasted grouse, with squash and creamed corn. Althema started bringing out the water glasses when there was a knock on the door. “I will get it,” I called out. I walked to the door and opened it for Reverend Paul and the mayor and smiled warmly.
“Welcome, sirs. The table is set in the main room.”
