Ethan had never spoken a word to me before, but today he said hello. With such a soft voice, I almost thought I had imagined it, but one quick look over at his round eyes and gentle face revealed that he was patiently awaiting a response. When I first started volunteering at Shining Hope Farms, many of the other volunteers told me that it takes him some time to open up to someone new. Even though I was never given the specifics of Ethan’s disabilities, my understanding of his special needs caused me to search for other ways in which I could reach out to him. With the more sessions we had, I slowly began to pick up on the nonverbal cues he would use for communication. Most of them were so brief and subtle, it was almost impossible to notice
