“The official cause of death was sudden unexplained death in childhood (SUDC). Her organs shut down. The doctors couldn’t find any reason, so they came up with a catchall diagnosis.”
“Darlin’, I don’t know what to say.”
“There’s nothing anyone can say.”
Fiona poured them another cup of tea. “Was Ray with you when she died?”
“No. By the time I reached him on his cell phone and he made it the hospital, it was too late.” The image of Ray as he rushed through the door and stopped when he saw her holding their dead daughter was a clear as fourteen months ago. “You got me on that one.”
“I had pleasant dreams about Glendara that would turn into nightmares of the night Kelly died. The first night I spent at Rosemont, I didn’t have one bad dream. When I went back to Macon, they started up again. That’s when I knew I had to come back.”
“Have they stopped?”
“That one has. I’ve had others. Actually, from the moment I stepped inside Glendara strange things started to happen that I can’t explain.”
Fiona softly said, “You didn’t say anything yesterday when I asked if you’d seen anything.”
“I didn’t want to tell you in front of Ray. He’s very closed-minded. He doesn’t believe in supernatural phenomena. Unless he’d seen it himself, he wouldn’t believe it.”
“Skeptic?”
“In the worst way. The odd thing is the dreams started right after Kelly’s funeral. I would dream about Glendara which was odd as I haven’t thought about it since I was nine. The house was blue with white trim like it is now.”
“So that’s why you chose those colors?”
Casey shook her head.
“What happens in the dream?”
“I see the door open. A man stands in the doorway and waves for me to come inside. His smile is warm and welcoming.
