Personal Narrative: Garland Isler

When I was 13 years of age I was visiting my family in northern Michigan for the summer. I was only supposed to be there till the school year started and then I was supposed to head back to Detroit. But as fate should have it, it didn’t work out that way. While horsing around with my family, I had broken my foot to the point that I needed surgery. So I talked to my dad and asked him since the rest of my summer was ruined, and for the fact that my doctor was there, I asked if I could stay with my grandmother and start the school year.

This is where I met my neighbor. His name is Garland Isler, he is a former Lutheran minister and retired realtor. I always enjoyed meeting new people, especially the older generations, I love listening to

When I was 16 years of age, with the help of Mr. Isler I became the youngest hunter safety instructor in northern Michigan. I have also went on multiple hunting trips with him in the woods in our back yard. Where he taught me tracking skills, calls and how to scent, and everything else to do with deer hunting.

When I turned 18 years old, Mr. Isler convinced me to become involved in the local blood drive, over the next year I would give almost a gallon of blood. From what I can remember Mr. Isler has given about 60 gallons of blood to date. And is still donating to this day. He has received multiple awards for saving so many lives with the blood he has donated.

He does so much for the community and has taught so many people so many things and helped prepare multiple people on how to prepare for life. He has taught youth’s morals and values, respect, and hard work. There are not many people left in the world like Mr. Isler and I only wish that everyone could have someone like him to guide them into adulthood like I did because without his influence I would not be the man I am
