Empty, cold, desolate, static. Those words aptly describe my family home before two bundles of doggy joy named Georgia and Rascal entered the picture. Spotted with black and white patches, those energetic puppies brought light where there was dark and noise where there was silence. Before they came along, our house was empty, mourning the loss of a most beloved old Black Lab. Georgia and Rascal brought youthful healing into our home, but also brought a lesson. A lesson of patience. My family and I had been debating over whether we should get another dog. It had been months since our old dog had passed and our house was lacking something. It all started with an incident with the window ledge. The dogs had been gnawing on the wooden part for an undetermined amount of time; however, we noticed the problem when my brother saw the splintering edge of the ledge. Soccer balls, stuffed animals, socks, hoses, and a vacuum were all victims of the terrible two in their worst times. My mother was particularly unhappy with all of these destructive results. What set her off was the window ledge being torn to shreds.
I can recall her thundering, “That’s it! One of them has to go!”
My brother, sister, and I rushed downstairs to see what was the commotion. We arrived to see my mother fuming. We all were afraid of what might happen next, but also knew no drastic steps were to be taken until my father got home.
When my dad got home, we held a family meeting to discuss the matter at hand. As a family, we concluded that in exchange for not getting rid of one of the puppies we children would play a bigger role in watching and caring for them. All of us would learn to develop more patience as time progressed.
