Personal Narrative: Growing Up In Brazil

Growing up in Brazil is growing up in a society full of hard workers. From childhood we are taught to be persistent and fight for our beliefs in order to prosper. However, we are not always provided with the means to achieve that prosperity.
Since my arrival here, a little less than two years ago, I have fought hard. The first obstacle in my path has been language; having to learn English was a hard experience. Every day I would watch the news to expand my vocabulary and strengthen my wording. Gladly I was able to overcome it; now I am in position to help the others.
In addition, I had to get a job to help my family, but being a person who is never satisfied with little, I constantly was looking for a better employer. My first job was at a Chinese restaurant; unsatisfied with the few hours they had given me, I went out to look for a better one. After a week I found a job at a pizza place. After a few months, seeking better payment, I pursued another job. Now, at 18, I am an employee at a car dealership.

This was a humongous wall in my path. I come from a society where grades do not matter. What decides one’s future is one’s knowledge. To get into a university one would need to pass an exam. The grades I had in Brazil really hurt my academic performance.
After a while, things got better. I was Americanized and able to live my life easily, but it was too late. The time it took me adapt, even though short, harmed my performance. At least now, I know there are not any speed bumps in my path anymore; now I can and will
