Personal Narrative: Growing Up In El Paso

Growing up in El Paso, Texas, is like living in two places at once. With Juarez, Mexico, being only ten feet away, they influence a lot of the culture in El Paso. Family and friends can be found just about anywhere and at any time. From the supermarket to Chico’s Tacos, there is no escaping the loving feeling when one sees a familiar face. It’s a very interactive city, especially during the holidays. Downtown we have our Thanksgiving parade and the lighting of our massive Christmas tree. During these events, everyone comes together and it simply feels like home.
When I was younger, El Paso was much smaller to me since I lived both on the east-side of El Paso and the west-side. I started off on the west-side of El Paso in a small town called Canutillo. Being a single mother isn’t easy because she had to be in ten places at once. Through this she wasn’t always able to keep up with the bills, and we always seemed to be moving. I remember moving to Las Vegas for a semester in second grade. Then we moved to the east-side of El Paso for another semester when I was in fifth grade. All I can remember is moving, and staying away from the place that I truly wanted to be, which is Canutillo. When middle school came along, my mom had the marvelous opportunity to get a job at the Post Office in Canutillo! The only problem was that my mom couldn’t afford another house at the moment, so I had to travel with her to work at three in the morning and stay at her job until school started. One can only imagine what this did to my sleep schedule and my school life. But at least my mom was happy, and we were on the right track to having a more secure life. It was a blessing yet a curse on me. I didn’t want to wake up extra early to go to school, but I didn’t want my mom’s opportunity to
