Last year, my husband Joseph planted our crops like any other season, but this season was different. The townspeople were angry with our unfair prices and burnt our barn and all of our money’s worth of crops. We were broke and didn’t even have enough money or food to feed our kids. Joseph decided to take me and our family to Oregon. We told William first, because he’s our oldest son. He was very excited to go to the new land and travel across an ocean for the first time. Of course we all are because none of us have ever traveled more than 50 miles out of town. George is not very calm about these kind of ideas. We can’t forget bedding and tents, so we have somewhere to sleep. We are also bringing our cooking items like pots, pans, and eating utensils. Food and water is very important, so we brought bacon, dried beans and fruits, eggs, salt, and many more. Household items are important to start our new life in Oregon, so we packed a rocking chair, stools, trunks, boxes, and a piano for our children. Our families prized possession is a family bible that tells our story. We also need tools to farm on the new land, so we brought a plow, shovel, butcher knife, saw, and more. This wagon is four feet by ten feet and is overloaded with items. The animals we are bringing are four oxen named Tom, Lee, Jessie, and Julia, four cows named Howard, Herbert, Lucy, Dora, and our two mules names are Floyd and Nancy. I am leaving behind my ex husband, which has died from a disease. I loved him and he left the world without hesitation. I want to get away from all of the sad memories and start a new life. Our family has to take a ferryboat all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to America. That will cost us a lot of our life savings for the trip. When we get to the East coast, we will walk to Independence. My husband expects there to be pigs already cooked running around and very rich soil and treasures.
