Nolan Blackwood had been a queasy kid for as long as he could remember. In fact, when he was six years old he’d broken his nose and had nightmares for at least two years about the blood pouring from his nostrils. Despite this, he loved to help people. Medicine fascinated him, and how the body reacted to it fascinated him even more. Everything in his mind rejected the idea of seeing blood, touching blood, but his strong morals definitely beat the fear out. So here he was, his first day as an official intern at an actual hospital. His heart was pounding, the thudding in his ears distracting him from what his resident was saying. I’m fine, I just… I don’t really like blood,” Nolan responds. Anita tips her head back in a loud laugh, quieting when the resident gives her a stern glare. “What are you doing here, then? We’re interning in a hospital. We’re going to become surgeons.” “Is it a dumb idea? Yeah, probably. But it’s what I’ve always wanted. I’m Nolan, by the way. Blackwood.” Anita looks pointedly down at his nametag and he laughs, “Right. You knew that already.” “There’s nothing wrong with a formal introduction. Anita Perez.” They shake hands, and Nolan has officially made his first friend in the hospital. He was scared, but at the same time excited. Of course he’d experienced blood in school, and he’d seen some pretty nasty stuff. However, nothing would compare to actually operating on a live person, someone whose life was his responsibility. Nolan’s internship went by in a flash. With Anita and a few other acquaintances by his side, he was able to slowly but surely get used to seeing blood.
