Cancer changed my life. Cancer was the name of the phantom that caused my grandmother’s symptoms. These life changing symptoms included weight loss, unexplained bruising, and joint pain. Despite these, she never complained and continued to care for me. Although Vietnam was not our world, my grandmother raised me with the intention that I would be educated about my culture. She would often tell me stories of her life in Vietnam. These stories retold her vivid experiences of selling food on the side of the road and working in rice fields. Having lost everything during the war, she offered me only her distant memories. After years of hearing tales of my motherland, I eventually went to Vietnam to attend my grandmother’s funeral.
