Personal Narrative: How Coral Is Dependent On Communication

Coral is dependent on communication. In the ocean, the small polyps that make up entire coral reefs speak their own kind of language. They communicate both internally and externally with the other species surrounding them and living within them. This communication allows for the interacting species to survive. Coral is dependent on the creatures it communicates with, and without this system, it would die off. Humans are often very closed-minded with our ideas of communication. A few years ago, I had an experience that changed what I understood communication to be. Up until this point, I viewed communication one way: talking. Then I met Coral. Coral challenged what I was used to. I adapted to her way of communication and learned how to interact with her. However, it was not automatic. I had to learn. Over time I could see what she needed, and I understood her personality. I learned to communicate with her, and I grew as a person because of it. In life, people must learn to do this. We must constantly be working to understand new ways of communication between each other and the different species of our world. We must learn to listen when there are no words. Life is filled with things we do not know or understand. It is my goal to be able to look outside of myself. This can only be done by being an active listener. By taking in different viewpoints, opinions, information, and stories we can begin to better understand how to approach the world around us and how to communicate with those we interact with. There are many ways to experience this; one of those is education. For me, this is the next step. I want to continue to learn and not have my knowledge stall.
