Personal Narrative: How Lus Changed My Life

The story of Lus changed my life at the end of the summer of 2012. I had been working as a camp counselor at the Salvation Army Wonderland Camp for two years already with girls who were 11 and 12 years old. This experience allowed me to build strong relationships with the campers for three years. One of the campers was named Lus, and she was particularly quiet and reserved compared to the rest of the group. On the last day of the summer camp, Lus approached me and told me that she had something to tell me. When I pulled her out of the group to talk to her in private, she let me know that she was being abused by her father and didn’t want to go back to her house. I reported the situation to my supervisor, who told me that the camp had to report the incident to the state and that no further legal actions could be taken by the camp. I never knew what happened to Lus after that last day of camp.

One of the aspects that caught my attention was the program’s advanced curriculum, which provides students with concentrations in specialized areas of practice. I am particularly interested in the micro concentration “Practice with Vulnerable Populations,” since it entails a practice with children and their families. This specialization is exactly what I am looking for my career as a social worker, since it prepares students to advocate for the well-being of dysfunctional families and vulnerable children. In the long-run, I would like to work at the Department of Child and Family Services or at a foster family agency.
