Personal Narrative: How Moving Changed My Life

“Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold. A circle is round; it has no end. That’s how long, I will be your friend.” These words rang out as the girls sang in my Daisy Girl Scouts group. I followed along mumbling the phrase, but not completely understanding. At the age of six, I never believed my friends could be anything other than gold. I could not comprehend the thought of replacing or finding new acquaintances. Since the day I was born, my family has always been moving, whether it be through out Ohio or miles across states to Florida. Never settling in one place caused me to rarely have connections with people other than my family. Although, this is not a burden on my life because now I enjoy each new adventure and appreciate my family more than others. Moving has also made the emotional bonds and attachments I do create even more special and meaningful. During my elementary school year in Ohio, we were finally in an area for over a few years, but suddenly my parents divorced. Being in Florida introduced me to people from all different backgrounds, who made me aware to current society and the world around us. Florida brought my attention to small differences I can make in others lives and has pushed me to be a better individual. In a way, Florida became gold and Ohio became silver.
But then my mother came with more news at the end of my tenth grade year. The news once again was that my family must move back to Ohio.
