Personal Narrative: How My Mom Changed My Life

The evident pain of an appalling time where my mother was at her weakest, not knowing how she would support her four children after being laid off during the Great Recession of 2008 was suffocating. Growing up in adversity, I never had a father figure to look up to, other than an illustration of a man leaving his family behind during the terror attacks of 2001. My family and I lived in a studio tenement, where we all slept on a single bed. I can remember my mother’s crying that lasted countless of nights, wondering if she would be able to financially support our family. I find it grossly unfair that the vast complexity of adulthood was initiated at the time of my childhood. Having no father throughout my life has been excruciating, especially at a boisterous stage of my innocence. I was suspended multiple times, received unacceptable grades, and was bullied in elementary school. I found myself isolated in the institutional disadvantaged environment in which I grew up in, recounting many times where I questioned my own life. However, a single night sparked an awakening of new personal perspectives. Once I accepted my mistakes, I was able to establish bonds, gradually become the top of my class, and serve in organizations by obtaining leadership roles. Simultaneously, I extended my duties by obtaining a tutoring job to support my family financially. Taking initiative as the youngest, my fulfillment of the role that my father could have never done made me independent amidst an age in which I am supposed to be dependent on a parent.
