In the midst of howling winds and relentless rain, a tree had fallen in my backyard. The frightening sound had awoken me; at once I was certain, hurricane Maria was here. She made a sound so haunting I wholeheartedly believed the concrete walls I called my home were commencing to shatter beneath her chaos. It went on until midday and its end brought peace to our hearts. Later that night, my family and I realized peace is at times shortly lived. Rivers began to overflow, thus, half of my city was underwater in a matter of minutes. As my family and I rushed to my neighbor’s second floor, I heard my mother whisper to herself, ”This cannot be happening.” I reflected on those words the entire night.
