In the Face of Adversity Even those individuals that grew up with nothing cannot profess to be self-made men when asked about their success. One does not make his own opportunities; they are presented to him even in the face of adversity. That is the difference between those who suffer under their hardships and those that rise above them. Therefore, it is not the adversity in one’s life that builds his character, though it may seem that way. Away out is required to escape any detrimental situation and grow from it. While some adversity is beneficial to the development of skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking, most cases, especially severe ones, result in unhappiness and little gain.

My mother, for instance, was very poor throughout most of her childhood. Her family hardly had enough money to buy clothes; however, her mother treasured the fine arts and let her daughter take painting lessons. My mother went on to sell her art at fairs to make money. Now she works as an artist and paints because it is what makes her happy. Had she not been given that opportunity to learn art, she would have no way to make money as a child or distract herself from her poverty and depression. In the same situation, many people wouldn’t have been so lucky as to have a way to develop a talent. Similarly, Jeanette Walls in The Glass Castle only became a proficient writer because she had the opportunity to constantly write for her school’s newspaper despite her poverty. Rarely do poor or struggling students get the chance to have their writing valued or appreciated, whether it is because their teachers don’t have faith in them or they lack motivation. Pecola had no way out of her life and lacked the defiance or strength to stand up for herself, nor did she had anyone to pay attention to her and help her through her suffering.
