Color popping lights of pink and yellow fill the air as booming music is heard down the block, all the way to the abandoned office building on the corner of mill road and pawnee. It grows louder each time we gain a step up the narrow staircase, Nicole and I getting more winded by the minute. “How can Steve walk up these steps everyday. Honestly I would need an escalator to carry me to the top.” Nicole and I begin to laugh, she pulls her pinpoint hair into a slick back ponytail, revealing her once dirty blonde persona, which has been altered to a chestnut brown color. Nicole changed a lot in the past year. I mean, it is a lot of pressure being the “it girl” at Carolina High. I’ve somehow remained myself. Maybe not as popular or pretty as Nicole we’ve been best friends for the past fourteen years of our lives. Nicole always gets everything. She’s gorgeous, athletic, and intelligent, even if she doesn’t want anyone to know; well except me. Nicole has some of the best grades in our class this year, she even tries to fail tests at times just to look average, she’s definitely more than average.
