Personal Narrative: Joining The North Korea Marine Corps

Lethargy may come in a repetition of passionless days. After a long run, it is essential to take a break to prepare for the next step. Being away from the norm may change one's life. Before I joined the Republic of Korea Marine Corps, I was effortless and I was desperately in need for change.
Every male Korean citizen is obligated to serve for the country due to the ongoing North Korea's attack. Most of the people join the military at the age of eighteen to nineteen. I was about a year or two late to join the military than the average so I did not hesitate to serve for the country. The reason I chose the Marines was not just because I needed a strong stimulus, but also I wanted to go somewhere that requires a higher standard of physicality and mentality.

After Basic training, I was stationed in the front line to protect the very first defense line of the country. My path from a private to a Sergeant Platoon leader was also an arduous way. The training in the Weapon Company was more specialized and technical compared to basic training. 81mm mortar was my specialty and I did my best to operate it in a most efficient way since the attack from the North Korea could occur in anytime. I tried hard just like everyone else did until I had to lie down on a table for an operation. I did not realize how damaged my body was due to training. Now, I have less than a month left to get discharged from the Marines. I had the chance to walk out of it six months ago; I later found out that with such an aggrieved body, I could have been exempt from the mandatory service. Although the welfare of the soldiers may be one of the poorest in the world since I got paid about hundred dollars to two hundred dollars a month, I chose to complete my unfinished task.
