Journey to America

MY father in-law Reiner lived in Berlin Germany during World War II. He was a young boy about six years old. I admire his determination and drive. His father was gone like so many others during the war. My father in-law looked out for his family even when times were tough. My father in-law is a hard worker and sets a great example of what tenacity and hard work can get you. It wasn’t’ always so for him. When he was just a boy it was a fight to survive and even get the smallest morsel of food. This is his story of how my father in-law came to the America.

Imagine being a small boy of just six years old and night after night hiding from the continued bombings of the allied forces during World War II.

His family emerged from their place of hiding and received word that the Allied forces are sending help instead of bombs. Shortly after the bombings stopped the military sent in helicopters and trucks to help the German woman and children. He was placed on a helicopter with his mother and brother. They whisked many families away to camps. These camps were not like the ones that the Jews were sent to. There was food, shelter, clothing and security. From here my father in-law and his family were able to book passage on a ship bound for American. It was a start of a new life. Big adventure awaited the boy in America. After many days or possibly a week. My father in-law arrived in American. They had to wait in long lines through customs and to get a visa to be admitted in the United States. He was given an exam by the doctor to make sure he was not sick. He was given a shot but doesn’t remember what for. Once given the okay My father in-law boarded a train to Arizona another adventure across the country. The things he could see from his window. The open spaces, forests and cities. So much room and openness. Gone were the days of the content bombings and scarce food. What lay ahead was a world of security and possibilities if only one would reach for
