Life is difficult. It is fact one of the greatest truths. The complexity of human life is impregnated with adversity and individual challenges. Situations out of our control that induce agony and confusion – impediments that one is forced to overcome. My challenge and blessing was to be born in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, commonly referred as the deadliest city in the world. In the past decade, Ciudad Juarez gained a very negative reputation. The capital city of murder is the label people have of Juarez, the city I grew up in. The only thing outsiders see are dogs wandering in the cracked streets with a feeling of desperate insecurity. A childhood in Juarez unwraps the secret, that its beauty cannot be perceived by the eyes. The beauty of my city was the warmth of its people’s hearts. I was raised in that beauty, in the warmth that my family provided. My mother raised me with a perfect combination of love, religion, and discipline. Education has always been one of the main lessons my family taught me, the importance of education was transmitted to me since an early age, and my love for learning has always been present. My mother taught me to be respectful, honorable, and more importantly to enjoy life no matter the circumstances. In 2009, my beautiful city, Juarez, exploded into a war of crime and drugs. Crime made the love in the city turn into fear, the city became a ghost town; the city was dying. Living in the most dangerous city in the world was a threat to my principles, values, and dreams. However, the unity of my family was the answer, their love was my hope, but it was impossible not to change. Thankfully my transition was good, adversity forced me mature as a person.
