Currently, I live in a small beach town in southeastern North Carolina, a place that has remained relatively unchanged since I was very young. However, as more and more people become familiar with this beach, there has been a significant influx of travelers, retirees, and other individuals seeking to make a home here. This alone is not what concerns me – rather, it is the destruction of the island’s native habitats as well as the aesthetic of the small town itself. Many older, smaller homes are torn down on a regular basis and replaced with three, four, and even five story hotels and condominiums.
