Personal Narrative-Marching Band Competition

I was first introduced to marching band competitions through my high school band director Mr. Bowen. I always wondered how he prepared the band competitions and how he picked the ones we traveled to. So I decided to interview him to find out. My main topic was to find out how he went upon finding them and inviting other bands to our competitions. I managed to sit down with him and ask a few thing to clarify how the process goes. It all starts with learning the purpose of marching competitions. I asked him why he does it and his response was, “to see how our band measures up to other bands from different schools of similar size”. So to lead off in that matter I need to find out what happens first. “I look for a reputable composer. If it's a new one I will listen to the pieces and take a look at it to see if it will be a good fit for the group,” was his response when inquired about the process of selecting a song to play. After learning the process of choosing a piece I then asked how the students learn it. “That all starts with sight reading playing as much as possible top to bottom then breaking it down into smaller sections and work on it. I asked him what it all led up to and he told me “we attend a championship and the location depends. On a yearly basis schools within out circuit apply to host and then are voted on by other high school band directors”. Based on this information it helped me to understand why they work so hard. But that actually struck a new question for me to ask. Is the completion only regional or do they have a national one? When asked this he told me “I've never really thought about it.
