The sound of Berkeley’s feet hitting the ground with each step she took was soft and repetitive. She knew she had arrived late to camp, but it didn’t bother her all that much. She was aware of what cabin she was supposed to be in and she had her schedule for that day tucked away neatly in the suitcase her mom had bought just for the occasion. The rocks on the path caused the wheels of the suitcase to veer slightly as she dragged it along. It was the summer of 2019. School had just let out for the next three months and Berkeley would be returning to WestMount High as a senior. She had fully planned on staying in the same pair of pajamas and watching reruns of Jane The Virgin all summer, but her mother insisted she go to a sports camp. This …show more content…
She easily found her cabin with the letter ‘C’ large and broad on the door. The porch was wooden and slightly worn from previous occupants, coated lightly with dirty footprints. Mira drags her suitcase up the two steps, jerking it up onto the porch when the wheels get stuck. Slowly she places her hand on the doorknob taking in a breathe. She lets it out as she opens the door, her hand shaking as she does. Not to Mira’s surprise, the cabin is empty and quiet. The whole thing is made out of wood, along with the six bunk beds that occupy most of the space. Bags filled with her room mates belongings are scattered around the room, all of the beds taken except for the one to her left. Her bunk is on the bottom, dark and empty. There was no doubt in Mira’s mind her mother had packed it. She flipped it open to a random page, seeing her messy six year old handwriting covering the pages. WIth a sigh she closes the journal and goes to place it back in her bag, but stops and looks up when she hears someone running to the cabin. Mira had left the door open when she came in, and there was nothing to stop the girl that came bounding in. A girl around the same age as Mira stood in the doorway, her clothes pristine and expensive. Her breathing is heavy as she leans down and places her hands on her knees. Her hair is a bright shade of blonde and she’s really skinny. In her time observing the girl she doesn’t see that her eyes have landed on the item in her hands. Mira’s eyes go wide and she quickly shoves it back into the bag. The girl giggles lightly with a small smile on her face. She takes a few steps towards Mira, pointing at her suitcase. “Your mom packed that, didn’t she?” The girl smiles widely, her teeth perfectly aligned and white.
