I recall a time when I believed that the world did not reserve a spot for me, a time when I thought that I had no purpose. I desperately searched for an answer and one fateful day, I found it.

My family vacationed at Walt Disney World for my sister’s sixteenth birthday; it was the time of year when the Magic Kingdom threw its annual Halloween parties and, naturally, my entire family dressed up: my dad a pirate, my mom a wench; and with pink gowns, gloves, and tiaras, my sister and I were princesses.

Not only did my sister and I look royal, we were even treated like royalty. During the parade, princesses and villains alike curtseyed and bowed, all except one: the Evil Queen merely folded her arms and glared with jealousy. It was enough to make any twelve-year-old feel special.

We stood in line for the Monster’s Inc. Laugh Floor, a show where jokes are read and the audience interacts with the characters from Disney Pixar’s: Monster’s Incorporated. Standing in line, I felt a tug on the bottom of my dress. “PRINCESS AURORA!!!”

I looked down to find a small girl with brown hair, dressed head-to-toe as Princess Aurora, meeting my eyes with the biggest, most excited expression I had ever seen.

Everyone turned and stared including her mother, who began to look embarrassed; I did the first thing that came to my mind.

I “became” Princess Aurora.

I knelt down, eye-level with the little girl, and put on the most genuine, “princess-ey” smile I could. With as much grace and Disney knowledge that I could muster, I began to imitate the Disney princess that this little girl admired with all her heart.

“Well, hello there!” I stated delicately with a hint of excitement.
