Personal Narrative: Moving To Island Lake Life

Life jacket: check, ski: check, rope: check. The end of a long summer day at the lake means a water-ski before dusk. A lone loon calls in the distance as the fiery orange orb of the sun sinks below the horizon. The water glistens and reflects the patched colors of the quilted sky. Clouds float lazily over the water and my family is in action.
Boating and lake life have been a part of my world since I moved to Island Lake. Growing up with a body of water as my backyard made everyday an adventure, but with it came a cost: everyday, without fail, I had to drive 45 minutes into town to do everything. Since my family was active and involved, this commute was not an easy task, but we learned to make the most of the drive. It was in the car that I found my love for reading. As a first grader, Mary Pope Osborne’s The Magic Tree House series kept me entertained. As time progressed reading developed into more than just a way to pass the time. It became something I couldn’t imagine living without.

My mom would play Wicked, Josh Groban, and Mamma Mia CDs to keep my sister and me entertained as the miles flew by. I would belt the lyrics to “Defying Gravity” and “Dancing Queen” much to my mom’s dismay.The trip wasn’t just 26 miles of pavement anymore, it had become a musical production because time was no object when I was focusing on the next harmony part that Elphaba had to sing.
