I began playing oboe in the sixth grade. From the first day, I was petrified playing in front of anybody. Fast forward six years and I was called into my band director’s office and told I would be a soloist for our marching band show. The first time I played in front of the band, I was so scared that I didn’t even have to use vibrato because my shaking did it for me. But by our first contest, I found myself more worried about the rest of the band than if I would nail my solo- I always did. Slowly but surely, the nerves faded as I began to enjoy performing and hearing myself play to the applause of the crowd.
