Personal Narrative: My Eagle Project

It was an outrageous idea on many levels. First of all, I was attempting a project using skills I had never even used, let alone mastered, - woodworking, construction, and basic building. That alone could have doomed the project. Secondly, it required a level of organizational and managerial expertise which was totally foreign to me. I had usually preferred to be a strong team member, so taking charge was an intimidating adventure. When I began to contemplate my Eagle Project, I inquired about specific additions which would benefit a number of different organizations. After discussing an idea with one of my mother’s coworkers, I decided that providing benches which Hana Church could donate to their sister church in Mexico would meet all the criteria of an Eagle Project. The idea excited me, but I was keenly aware that I was missing many of the skills necessary to make it successful. Yet, La Iglesia Impacto De Cristo Church is a very poor church, and since they were working to build a small sanctuary in which to worship, they could use some critical help. the benches which were suggested to me were needed to serve as pews in the sanctuary. …show more content…
After I was satisfied with the initial plans, I developed a work schedule, estimating the required manpower. However, all this planning did not address the real problem - I had never done any woodworking and lacked the skills to build the benches. With my project coach, I meticulously went through everything step by step to be certain that not only could I perform each required action, but I could teach that step to my volunteers. I now understand the maxim that to fully understand a subject, you need to teach it to someone else. I used tools I had never touched before, such as drills and a compound miter saw.
