Personal Narrative: My Experience As A Resident Assistant

RAILE is just not a program to prepare students for a Resident Assistant job, but an experience that enables individuals to grow and become more aware of their community. Before I joined RAILE program I was unaware of the true meaning of a leader. But thanks to the experience and the people in the program I was enlightened on what it mean to be a true compassionate and responsible leader. The thing that surprised me the most would be the effort and care the Resident Assistants put into their job. To them being a RA isn't just a job but a lifestyle, they are always demonstrating leadership qualities and sacrificing their time and effort to be a resource for their residents. When I see this it not makes me proud to be a resident but it makes me strive to be a better person.
RAILE has taught me the importance of leadership on the floor, that being a positive example on the floor is not always easy but in the long run it will benefit everyone. After experiencing the wide variety of components that RAILE has to offer I not only gained more skills but I also learned about myself as a person. I learned how much I love meeting new people and how to really listen to get to really know a person. My listening skills improved greatly and and I also gained leadership skills. I am now aware of how easy it is to get involved on campus and how to get others to join as well. The University of Delaware offers many opportunities for students to be engaged and feel comfortable. If I became a RA I would have full confidence that my residents were happy and feel at home here.
