Personal Narrative: My Experience At Boys State University

As someone that is not very comfortable around strangers, the last thing I would want to do is attend a leadership conference to be stuck with a couple hundred people I’ve never seen in my life, right? Well those were my exact thoughts when I heard about Boys State.Yet I still filled out an application to attend this conference. I’m still not too sure why I did so, but I’m very glad that I did.
One day late in the school year, I was sitting in the last class of the day and I really had nothing to do at this time. The playoffs for soccer were soon to come and schoolwork was really slowing down so I was fairly relaxed. I was honestly not very interested in potentially spending a week around a few hundred nerds that I wouldn’t be able to relate to. Especially considering that I am not very outgoing around people that I don’t know. However, my brother had attended Boys State the year before and told me a little about it. It is basically attempting to make it’s own cities with governments and teaching us of how a government should work. Although, what helped convince me was that there are 2 hours set aside for sports everyday and one of the possibilities was basketball. But I was still skeptical about the situation. I finally filled out an application. A few weeks after i turn in the application, I receive a letter saying that I had been accepted to attend Boys State. This also came with a registration card
