Personal Narrative: My Experience At Hickory Ridge

I attended Carolina International School, a small charter school in Harrisburg, NC for ninth and tenth grade. My freshman class consisted of twenty students and my sophomore class consisted of twelve students. I maintained an above average grade point average and made life-long friendships. The school did not offer any extracurricular activities and I felt as though the two years spent at the school were not as productive as they could have been. Then I transferred to Hickory Ridge High School for my junior and senior year. It was hard adjusting and making new friends because cliques had already been formed therefore most of the time I just focused on my school work and kept my grades up because that was vital to me. I joined the Key Club at Hickory Ridge which is such an amazing thing to be a part of. I really enjoyed taking part in this club because of the different volunteering activities I could participate in and how the club was centered serving others and making a difference in the community. Through the Muslim American Society of Charlotte I have volunteered over the last five years with my fellow community members, some of the things I have had the good fortune to be a part of helping during the month of Ramadan. On the weekends, my family and I would go to the center half an hour before it was time to breakfast. Hungry and thirsty, we never felt it. We were all more than happy to serve other community members; my brothers would get a pair of gloves and begin to put out the dates on the table. I would make sure the water was in the cooler, once prayers were over it was a mad dash to the kitchen and it was time for me to help serve my fellow sisters their meal for the evening.
