Personal Narrative: My Experience At PTK

Today, Sunday April 26, 2017, I participated in my last Phi Theta Kappa Induction for new members. As I sit here contemplating on how to begin this essay, I cannot help but reminisce on the past year and the opportunities PTK has granted me. I graduated high school with the A+ scholarship and was conflicted with the choice of attending a University or a community college. Looking back at my decision, I would not have had the chance to join PTK and experience all its eminence if I had taken the University route. I was a timid first year student at SCC. I was afraid of what the future held and the experiences and challenges I would face. Notice how I was writing in past tense. It is about recognizing a problem, facing it, and utilizing my strengths to work through them. More importantly, to learn from every problem. I cultured, “I didn’t fail, I proved it wasn’t the best way to do it”. In addition, the leadership role I held taught me a lot about myself. It taught me how to inspire people when members felt defeated, how to have patience in overwhelming circumstances, the confidence to make unpopular decisions and integrity by doing what is right instead of needing to be right.
