Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Naval Academy

My initial interest in the military was sparked by a military recruiter and the influence of my grandfathers. Even though the military recruiter at my school was not in the Navy he allowed me to consider other opportunities to have a successful future. My grandfathers served in the military, one of which was in the Navy. he served during Vietnam as an electrician on several ships. Having received information through word of mouth and research, I was able to look into what service in the military would be like as an officer. I have been told by many people that I am a great leader. I realized after discovering the academy that if I'm a good leader I should go to the place where the best leaders go to get educated. The academy will not only focus on my academic career but my physical fitness and Military lifestyle. One of my goals in life is to become a person who has lived a life serving others. I have had several experiences that have helped contribute to my character and integrity. One in particular is my journey as an Eagle Scout. In the beginning we focused on basic principles. These principles are something that I had to memorize, but eventually became more than words in a book. They became a way of life. The Scout Law has 12 points, describing what a person should be everyday, at all times. By striving to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent, it is difficult to not be a leader among others. Memorizing and living the Scout Oath means always remembering to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. These seemingly small parts of an organization have contributed to a largely important lifestyle.
