Personal Narrative: My Experience Of Working In Hawaii

It has been 10 years since arriving in Hawaii and I miss everyone and China very much. Luckily there are many other Chinese workers that I can talk to and share traditions with. In Hawaii, it is very sunny and hot here which makes the work even more tiring. The work starts early in the morning and ends in the late afternoon. I would like to come back to China, but it has been very difficult to save enough money to come back. When I signed the contract to work at the plantation, I didn’t expect the work to be so difficult. I came to Hawaii to help our family because we were suffering from hardships. I was told that I would go back to China wealthy and be able to help you all, but so far I feel like that will not happen anytime soon. I believed that the work would be easy and there would be good pay, but instead the work is very tiring and the pay is little. I have worked here for 10 years, but I don’t have enough money to pay them back. We start work at 6AM and finish at 4PM and have an hour lunch break. Luckily I am able to get along with all the other workers, but sometimes the Filipino men and Chinese men fight over our pays. I usually like to spend time with the other Chinese women or a few of the Japanese women. We are all able to communicate with each other because of pidgin, pidgin is a language that is mixed with all the different ethnicities like Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino. One of my good friends that is a Japanese plantation worker is named Aiko. I learned that Japanese people like us have the tradition of taking off their shoes before entering a home. Aiko cooks Japanese foods for me like musubi and gyoza, which are both so delicious. Musubi is a like a ball of rice and gyoza are like dumplings.
