Personal Narrative: My Experience With Diversity

My experience with diversity throughout my life has so far been rather short, but in recent years I have grown to learn of its importance and have starting working to promote it. Growing up, I lived in a small town about a half hour away from the city of Pittsburgh. Many of the people living in this area were of the middle class on a socio-economic standpoint and almost all of the people I encountered were white. To say the least, I did not experience a lot of racial or socio-economic diversity prior to college. When I arrived on campus in August of 2013, I had a little bit of a culture shock when introduced to so many people that were so different from myself. I met people from varying socio-economic classes, races, religions, and even countries. It took time to adjust to this change, but was very rewarding when I did. …show more content…
Throughout my year with C3 I attended different discussions and events that exposed me to differing views and different cultures. I was safe zone trained along with other C3 members and college faculty. This training helped me to identify when someone might need help and how to approach these sometimes very difficult and sensitive situations. While I enjoyed the year that I was with C3, being a member of the group was a very large time commitment that I would not be able to keep on top of my already busy academic schedule. The things I learned from my experiences with C3 could be applied throughout the remainder of my college career. I was able to apply this knowledge during my time as a student leader in the marching band, a member of the executive team for the Chemistry Club, and a laboratory teaching assistant for general chemistry
