Personal Narrative: My Experience With Diversity

My entire life growing up in a small town, diversity was not such a big deal to me. Since I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, a region in South Texas where it is predominantly Hispanic. My experience with diversity changed when I went to a college that is seven hours away from my hometown Weslaco. I have adapted to all new types of diversity in my college experiences.
One lesson I learned by dealing with diverse people was when I first joined a sorority my first semester of college. I had always been told that when I joined a sorority, it meant that I would have friends for a lifetime. This is my first time ever being in West Texas, and it does feel a bit odd with having to adjust to a new setting. There are plenty of foods terms that I am not used to learning about that are not the same that I grew up with. Ever since I moved here to San Angelo, I have noticed a lot how the people here are more assisting to one another than people that are in my hometown. Being in San Angelo has gotten me out of the habit of being shy, I am able to have random conversations with strangers that I eventually develop friendships with. I also learned dealing with diverse people by being able to know that I had been born and raised in a Hispanic community. I was not really exposed to different cultures in Weslaco, but since moving to San Angelo, I have felt like I am in a different universe. I eventually got used to people of different cultures and habits. This whole experience got me to know that people of different races are each individually different and that they should not even be classified based on their personalities.
