Personal Narrative: My Experience With Fair Oaks

My experience with Fair Oaks is something I never dreamed of living. I was born and raise in Hammond, IN. I never even heard of Fair Oaks Farm at all. It wasn't until I moved to DeMotte, IN. I was 17 at the time looking for a first job. I didn’t want to do fast food, because all of my friends told me that it wasn’t a good idea. So I continued to look at my options. I saw that Fair Oaks was hiring for Mooville. Still not sure what it was about I asked my mother what Fair Oaks was. She told it was one of the largest dairy farms. That shocked me. I didn’t expect a huge dairy farm to be in Indiana, nonetheless a fifteen minute drive from my home. After I did my research on the place, I decided it would be a perfect first job. She told me to come in for an interview. At the time it was nerve wracking. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. The interview went smoothly. Jodie was a sweet lady when we first met. It's been a real privilege to work with her. After the interview, two weeks later I get another call from Jodie. I was sitting at lunch when I received the call. I was so ecstatic that I got the job, I literally ran out the lunchroom and ran out with excitement. A month or so later, I went for my orientation. During the orientation I learned many things that I did not know about cows or pigs for that matter. It was a hands down amazing experience that I get to be a part of every single day. My first day started on May 31, 2017. I was pretty nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. When I was getting trained for Mooville, at the time I thought it was going to be a lot harder than what it really was. I picked up on everything quickly. It was nice getting to talk with many different people. Getting to know many people and where they came from is genuinely interesting. One time I met a lady from Australia, She was so excited to be here and see how farming here was different than in Australia. It's crazy to think that people all over the world travel thousands of miles to come to Fair
